The whole family is getting excited when December arrives. This year my wife decided to capture more memories in her journal than ever before. This post will follow her efforts. I will try to keep it up-to-date so please come back often to see the new pages and read the latest update.
I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I or my family use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
December daily memories cover page
December arrived. We need to get ready for Christmas. How to start the new month? My daughter will drink a hot chocolate. My wife will drink a hot tea. I will go with one of my favorite coffee from Papua New Guinea.
There will be so many things happening in December so I’ll have to keep on updating this post regularly.
Day over day …
Sorry pumpkins it is time to move back to your storage boxes. My wife was talking about changing the decorations for weeks by now. It is really lucky that this year the first day in December is on Saturday. Honestly, my wife was on the hunt for Christmas decorations since the last Christmas. Having enough decorating items available she started from the ground floor up to the addict.
All tables, corners got some nice decoration. Lights are out there. We drove the neighborhood to see whether others also have the lights turned on already or not. Some did so we also had it on. Here in the Netherlands December is one of the most beautiful seasons. Lights are on many houses in many neighborhoods.
It is not snowing yet. The wind is blowing but not that bad. The temperature is not too cold.
The first Sunday of advent came early this year. A message also came early from my elder daughter. She asked if it is the day to light up the first candle? It is.
Early morning looking out of the window it was not too promising. It rained.
This day my wife started to put together a playlist. Since then we have Christmas music all day long. She also keeps adding to this list above.
If you wonder why some pages are left blank let me tell you. My wife is adding personal photos and additional memories to those pages later.
December is not the month to lose weight. My wife can cook and bake really good. If any of you knew me before I had issues with my sugar you would know how big I was. So it is time to get the first seasonal dessert in place. One of them is the Quince cheese. I don’t like the walnuts so my wife prepares this without them. If you look on the picture that is the actual quinces she used and the result. It took a few days to dry so she could cut them into such bite size.
5 December – Pakjes Avond
This is one of the most excited days in December. All my daughters come home. My wife and I work hard in the kitchen because this is a day to have the table full with all good food. Of course I only assist as the kitchen is my wife’s territory. Kids are excited. After a nice dinner with lots of chit-chats it is time to open the packages.
There are all different ones for everyone so it takes some time. There is one which my wife came up with a few years ago. Everyone gets a scratch off ticket. Not sure if that is the right expression but that is the one I found online. It is a nice big Christmas theme paper where you can scratch off a number for each day of December. Most probably the intention was that people do it daily and see what they win by the end of December. We are impatient. We do it right away as soon as we get it. The usual way to go is that the girls win the boys lose so this is how we played this year as well.
In the Netherlands Sinterklaas is the big happening. Christmas follows but that is nothing about gifts and packages. Christmas is about family, happiness, love. At Christmas families gather together and spend some great time together. We get all our kids in-house with their boyfriends. My wife cooks and bakes. There is one thing that will for sure happen which is my wife will say:
It took more than a day to prepare all that food and it’s gone in an hour.
She is right. It is mostly her busy in the kitchen but from time to time my daughters and me help in. I always tell her to be happy that we had all that to put on the table. Then she smiles.
Here in the Netherlands we decorate the Christmas tree the day after Pakjes Avond so we can enjoy the atmosphere it creates till the year is over.
Materials and tools used on the above pages
Here below is a list of online available tools, pens, pencils we use ourselves. The list will grow as the page grows and my time permits me adding to it.
They come in different colors and the same goes to picking them as for color pencils. The more colors the better.
Color pencil sets from Faber-Castell
We found these pencils really good quality and we highly recommend them. The more colors you have the easier you color your pages.
Sakura Pigment Liner Micron pens
Sakura pens are top quality and really easy to work with. You find these pens in all different colors and sizes. A few colors and some different sizes from the blacks will help you with all your drawings.
Staedtler Pigment Liners
Another alternative to the Sakura Pigment Liners is from Staedtler. My wife found these the same quality so she is recommending them as well.
Christmas Paper Pads
You can find all different sheets of paper so you can cut them to the size of your journal. On many of the December daily memories pages my wife uses these kind of papers.
